Woolley Hall, Wakefield, WF4 2JR

Location Map

Woolley Hall was built in 1635 and is an example of early Jacobean architecture. It was renovated around 1800 by architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville (who was employed by George IV to remodel Windsor Castle - which earned him a knighthood).

Wyatville specialised in period restorations and additions to historic mansions which included, amongst many others, Chatsworth House and Longleat House.

Woolley Hall was eventually sold by the Wentworth family in 1947 and acquired by Wakefield MDC. In 1952 it began a new life as a residential college and today this beautiful 17th Century house and surrounding 20 acres of grounds remains under the ownership of Wakefield Council.

Chantry Chapel

The medieval Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin, Wakefield is one of only four remaining in the country (chantry chapels also at Rotherham, St Ive's Cambridgeshire and Bradford-on-Avon).

Work on the Wakefield, River Calder chapel started in 1342. The chapel was included in the building of a new bridge following collapse after severe flooding.

"One of the most perfect specimens of architecture of the middle of the fourteenth century" - Walkers History of Wakefield.

The Chapel forms part of the Yorkshire Turner Trail (www.yorkshire.com/turner/trails). Turner visited Wakefield in 1797 during his first tour of Yorkshire. His chosen site on the River Calder and its view of the Chapel was a major focal point and the reason why so many artists visited Wakefield.

His watercolour (loaned from the British Museum) is currently on display at the Hepworth Wakefield.

The chapel is supported by the Friends of Chantry Chapel who contribute to its repair and maintenance.

St Paul's, The Balk, Walton, Wakefield, WF2 6JU

www.sandalmagna.com

The original St Paul's Church was built 1887, to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The then new owner of the famous nearby Walton Hall (site of the world's first nature reserve established by naturalist Charles Waterton) Edward Simpson JP, provided the land and most of the materials.

The main structure of the church underwent improvements in 1967, and more recently a fund raising campaign resulted in a new extension and up-dated facilities, making it the bright modern venue it is today.

St Paul's provided a brilliant weekend "hub" at the first Walton Arts Festival (www.waltonartsfestival.com) when YLMP hosted four events at the church. (See Previous tab) Many people commented about the superb acoustics.
